The final week of the season. For some, it’s just one more week to finetune their rosters before they begin their hunt for the mug. For others, is so much more. It’s not just a regular season, it’s a playoff game, because that game…could be their last. Here is the ultimate document that documents the history of the season’s final week.
Here are couple things to know: I’m not including the first two seasons on this massive list. The first season in Robioland was just eight teams and everyone made the post-season. I also kept off the year 2000, because outside of Griff and myself, no one else would know who I’m talking about. From that year, only Griff and I remain in the league and both of us had collected our playoff tickets long before the season’s final week. Eric and Don joined in 2001 and one of them was fighting for a post-season spot in that last week, so I decided that was a good place to start.
Now don’t forget, between the year’s 2001-2004, the final week of the season was week fourteen. We made the switch to a 13-game regular season in 2005 and then back to a 14-game schedule in 2021. Also, between 2001-2006, head-to-head was the first tiebreaker, followed by total points, so that final week could get quite confusing. We switched that up thankfully in 2007. Lastly, we were a division league up through 2011 and that sometimes played a part in seeding and playoff berths. Anyhow, enjoy….

WHERE WE STOOD
We entered the final week of the 2024 campaign with six teams already clinching a playoff spot and three teams eliminated. This left just three teams fighting for two spots, but it didn’t look like much of a fight. Both Michael and Eric led Colby by a game and were up a ton in points. Michael led Colby by 1,200 and Eric was up 862 points. If either won in week 14, they were in. The only way Colby could get in is if he won, one of them lost and then he would need to catch him in points. Odds…not good for the two-time defending champ.

WHERE WE STOOD
While Colby, the defending champ was dominating and teams like Griff, Michael, Calderon and Jeff had already clinched playoff berths, we were down to six teams fighting for just three posts. Myself, Matt and Bob had a slight advantage, as we were all 6-7 and a win meant we were in. However, Bob was facing Eric, who led him in points by over 1,300 so Vozzola was also in a win and pretty much he’s in situation. Masterson best shot to get in was to win and then have both Eric and Matt lose, then Matt would fall out and Rob would be in if he maintained his lead in points over Bob. Burrier had real no shot, but wasn’t officially eliminated.

Well, I produce the week’s high score and secured my six seed, as did Matt with his low scoring victory. Both wins basically eliminated Masterson and Burrier, who both lost anyhow. This meant the week 14 matchup between Bob and Eric was a playoff game. The old days, Castrone coasted to a victory, but not in 2023. Bob slip the league a dud, scoring the weekly low score and getting eliminated from the playoffs, handing Eric the 8-seed.

IN THE POST
The postseason was a “Colby vs Everyone” else situation and of those final teams battling for a playoff spot in the final week, only Neatock found a way to advance to the semifinals when he stunned 2-seed Griff, 1,643-1,355. Meanwhile, Eric was cursed by Colby and I lost to the 3-seed Michael, 1,581-1,187. The following week, Neatock’s postseason trip ended with a defeat to the eventual champ Colby, 1,487-843.

Five teams battled it out for the final three spots. If Calderon and Masterson won in week fourteen, they were in, no questions asked. Bob was 5-8, the same as Matt and Don, but his point lead was just 218. He needed to win and hold off Neatock. Or win and have either Calderon or Masterson fall, since he had outscored him, thus his odds were good with a victory. Matt was basically in the same boat, but with Bob and Calderon facing off, Matt would prefer a Bob win, since he had outscored Calderon by a lot. If both Bob and Matt fell, Neatock had to outscore Bob by 218 points. As for Don, he needed to win and have both Bob and Matt fall.

Calderon earned his spot with a win, while Masterson had the week’s low score and fell to Michael. However, with Bob losing to Rich and Matt taking care of business, Neatock was able to not only steal the final playoff spot from Bob, but he passed Masterson in the standings, taking the 7-seed. With Matt winning, Don had no shot, since his defeat to Burrier didn’t matter.

In the postseason, only Matt advanced to the semifinals, as Calderon fell to 3-seed Burrier, 1,108-920 and Masterson was taken down by the 1-seed Eric, 1,294-922. Matt ended up upsetting me, the 2-seed, 1,844-1,596. The following week, Neatock would pull off another big upset, eliminated the 1-seed Eric by just 70 points, 1,356-1,286. However, his miracle run ended in the title game, as Colby won his first championship, 1,975-1,256.

In a world gone mad, Rob Masterson earned his first ever top seed, with a 10-4 record, with Bob and Robio wrapping up the second and third seed. Neatock was also locked into aa postseason spot entering the final week. This left six teams battling for the final four playoff spots. Calderon, Michael, Jeff and Griff were all 6-7. Burrier and Eric were one game back. Burrier had one advantage…he was the scoring leader out of this bunch. Calderon was within reach (-202), while Michael and Jeff had a lot of ground to make up in points. Griff and Eric couldn’t catch Burrier in points.
Anyhow, if all four 6-7 teams could win, they were in. However, Michael and Jeff were facing off in week 14 and Griff had to take on Burrier, so two spots could be available for the steal for both Burrier and Eric. In fact, if Burrier won, he was in. Eric would then need to beat Colby and maintain a point lead over Griff to get in.

Both Calderon and Jeff secured a playoff spot with victories, but one of the most infamous incidents in league history happened during that Greenblatt victory. Michael failed to sub out an injured Dalvin Cook and put in Mattison sitting on his line. If he would have done that, he would have won. Instead, Evangelist lost. Burrier won and knocked Griff out of the playoffs, taking his spot. Meanwhile, Eric not only won, but he won big and was able to overcome his 579-point deficit to Michael and steal the final playoff spot.

In the playoffs, three of these teams advanced to the finals, including both Calderon, who defeated Neatock in the quarterfinals, 1,368-1,258 and Jeff, who upset 3-seed me, 1,191-995. However, it was Eric who stunned the world. He first took down the top-seed Masterson, 1,441-1,128. The following week, Jeff and Calderon played, with Jeff pulling out a 1,801-1,460 victory. Meanwhile, Eric kicked out the 2-seed Bob, 1,514-955, setting him up in the finals against the defending champ. Well, Eric became the first and only 8-seed to win it all, defending Jeff easily, 1,922-1,226.

Heading into the final week, Calderon was in control of the top seed, both Eric and Michael had locked in winning seasons and both Bob and Jeff had secured playoff spots. This left four folks fighting for three playoff spots. All four teams were 6-6, but Burrier was the top scorer of the group and had the 7-seed. I was 806 points back of Rich, but I had over 700 more than Don who was just +22 over Colby, thus took the final playoff spot. For Colby, he faced a tough one against Calderon, but if he fell and Don lost, he just needed to pass Don in points.

Burrier did what he had to do, upsetting Eric with an impressive victory, which locked him into the 6-seed. I lost to Bob by 64 points, but Don failed to secure a victory over 3-win Griff. Worse yet, Don only scored 1,176 points. Meanwhile, Colby lost to the top seed (Calderon), but he outscored Don by 185 points. He only needed 28 and was able to kick Don out of the playoffs and steal the 8-seed.

In the playoffs, Colby was stuck facing Calderon again and lost yet again, losing to the top-seed, 1,417-1,137. Meanwhile, both Burrier and I were able to pull off quarterfinals upsets. He beat three-seed Michael, 1,351-945, while I eliminated 2-seeded Eric, 1,777-1,635. In the semifinals, Burrier’s ride came to an end, as he fell to Jeff, 1,725-1,559, while I upset the top seed Calderon, 1,762-1,268. However, my upset specials came to an end in the finals, as Jeff secured his first career championship, beating me, 1,549-1,450.

The 2019 season was the year of the Murray-Calderon. Rich would finish the year with just one defeat, earning the top seed, while I finished second, not only earning the scoring crown, but crushing the all-time scoring record. On top of that, Don, Masterson and Castrone locked in postseason spots before the final week. This left four folks battling for the final three spots. Matt and Michael had the advantage. Both were 6-6 and a win and they were both in and the only way they could miss the playoffs is if Eric won and he outscored them. Since he trailed them both by 1,200, that was unlikely. Jeff had the 8-seed and led Eric by over 1,000 points, so if Eric beat Bob, all Jeff had to do was defeat Calderon, who had just one defeat all season. If Eric lost, it didn’t matter if

Matt did his part, easily taking down Burrier, who he would face again as the 6-seed in the quarterfinals. Michael lost to 2-win Colby, but it didn’t matter, as Eric couldn’t really catch him in points. Unfortunately for Jeff, he couldn’t upset Calderon and lost. Meanwhile, he might have helped Bob land his first gig at MTV, but the man didn’t repay the favor by beating Eric. Instead, Vozzola took down Bob and was able to steal that final playoff spot from Jeff.

Of these four teams, only Matt advanced to the finals. Eric was taken out by 1-seed Calderon, 1,547-1,021, while Michael had no chance against me, losing 1,692-831. Neatock took out 3-seed Don by just 60 points, 1,388-1,328. However, his run ended in the semifinals, falling to Calderon, 1,767-1,315 because the world deserved a Robio-Calderon championship game.

A record seven teams had yet to secure a postseason spot heading into the final week of the 2018 season. Five of them, seeded 4-8, were at 6-6 and based on points and matchups, Colby, Eric and Matt were basically in, win or lose. Meanwhile, both Calderon and Don were one game back and they faced both the seven and eight seeds. Rich would take on Jeff and Don would face Burrier. Because both Calderon and Don dominated Jeff and Burrier in points, the winner of those games were in, the losers were out.

Of the teams seeded 4-6, only Colby won, easily defending Griff, topping 2,000 and actually moving up to the three-seed. Eric failed to hit a grand and fell to Eric and Matt lost to Bob, but both, like Colby, secured a playoff spot. Calderon failed to put up a lot of points, but still managed to beat Jeff by just 70 points. That put him in as the 7-seed. Meanwhile, Don beat Burrier but just 109 points, giving him the 8-seed.

The lower seeds came to play in the postseason, as three of the top four teams fell in the quarterfinals. Eric, who landed in the 8-seed, was the exception, as he couldn’t overcome Marc, despite scoring over 1,600 points, losing 2,088-1,660. Meanwhile, 7-seed Matt took down 2-seed Bob by just 21 points, 1,492-1,471. 6-seed Don escaped with a 66-point victory over 3-seed Colby, 1,357-1,291 and 5-seed Calderon easily defeated Masterson, 1,757-1,073. In the semifinals, Matt dispatched the top-seed Marc, 1,438-1,016, while Calderon eliminated Don by just 76 points, 1,682-1,606. In the finals, Neatock was shooting for a second straight title and got it, defending Rich, 1,537-1,119.

A stunning six teams were fighting for three playoff spots heading into the season’s final week. Four teams were 5-7; Eric, Colby and Griff, thanks to total points tiebreaker, were in as the six, seven and eight seeds, while Burrier was outside looking in, as he was last in points among those 5-7 teams. Hell, Rich was behind two 4-8 teams in points. Speaking of…
Don and Robio were both 4-8, one game back, but both were ahead of Burrier in points and both were realistically within reach of Griff. I trailed Griff by 122, while Don trailed Griff by 276. It was the most realistic chance a 11th place team had to get into the playoff offs.
Eric was obviously in the best spot. Because he was so far ahead in points, the only way he was missing the playoffs was if he lost to Jeff and Colby, Griff and Burrier all won. Colby was in good shape as well, when it came to points. He would need to utterly collapse to lose a points tiebreaker to the non-playoff teams (the closest was me and I trailed by 674 points. Anyhow, like Eric, Colby was “win & in.” However, if he lost to 11-1 Bob, if both Griff and Burrier won, Colby was out. As the 8-seed, Griff was the most vulnerable, but like Eric and Colby, if he won, he was in (Rich was too far behind in points). However, if he lost, the problem was, Don and I were facing off, so one of us was going to win. Griff would need to maintain his tiny point lead over that winner. As for Burrier, he needed to beat Calderon, then needed just one loss from either Eric, Colby or Griff. Good times.

Both Eric and Griff did their part. Eric took down Greenblatt and Griff escaped with a low scoring victory over Masterson. However, Colby was stuck facing 11-1 Bob and while he kept it close and outscored both Eric and Griff, he lost to Bob, 1,601-1,438. This allowed Burrier, who defeated Calderon, to sneak into the postseason. Despite scoring 1,300 less points than Colby, he had won one more game. Thanks to Burrier’s win, both myself and Don were eliminated.

WHERE WE STOOD
Jeff Greenblatt had been dominating the standings, already wrapping up the top seed, while Calderon was dominating the points, earning the two-sed. Don was a surprising 8-4, along with Bob, with Masterson sat one game back, while I was sitting at .500. All six of us had sealed the deal and were playoff locks. This left five teams fighting for two spots, with only Neatock locked out of the postseason.
Both Eric and Burrier controlled their own destiny. Both sat at 5-7, needing a win to get in. That win was needed, as Colby, who had nearly erased a 1-8 start to win three straight and was just one game back of a playoff spot, leading both Eric and Burrier in points. If either lost and Colby beat Calderon, he would be in, the loser out. Also at 4-8 were a pair of Coomers. Griff actually also led both Burrier and Eric in points (slightly), while Molly lead Burrier by about 400, but trailed Eric by 120 points. Both Coomers needed either Eric and Rich to lose and also needed Calderon to defeat Colby. At least, Molly had a role to play, as she faced Burrier.

While Griff failed to pull out a W over Masterson, Colby came through and put the pressure on, defeating the scoring leader and eventual champ, but he didn’t get the help he needed. Both Eric and Burrier benefitted from playing the two worst teams in the league and it showed in the results. Eric knocked out two-win Matt, while Rich crushed Molly, who produced the week’s lowest score. In the end, nothing changed.

WHERE WE STOOD
Heading into the final week of the season, Bob had locked up the top spot, while a handful of 8-win teams were jockeying for the top seeds. Colby was just 6-6, but had locked up a playoff spot, while Molly, Don and myself were already thinking about next year. This left a pair of 6-7 teams, Jeff and Burrier, plus one Calderon, who was one game back, all battling for the remaining two spots.
For Jeff and Rich it was simple, win and they were in. Jeff had the toughest opponent, taking on 8-4 Matt, who was trying to get the third seed. Burrier was batting Colby, who had sealed the 6-seed. This left Calderon. At 5-8, he was a game behind the other two. Not only would Rich need to defeat last place Don, he would need one of them to lose, plus he would need to also pass that losing team in total points, which was going to be a challenge. Calderon trailed Jeff by 901 points and Burrier by 314.

Calderon got his win and scored well doing it (1,575 points), but he didn’t get the help he needed. Jeff survived a low scoring affair, beating Matt, while Burrier officially swept Colby with an impressive 1,681-1,529 victory. Jeff held onto the 7-seed, outscoring Burrier by 19 points for the season. Calderon missed the post-season for the first time since 2011.

WHERE WE STOOD
Bob was up top, holding off Colby for the top spot, while both Matt and Burrier had already received their post-season invite. Griff had also sealed the deal, sitting in the 5-spot at 7-5, but based on how others below him did, he potentially could fall all the way to the 8-seed if he wasn’t careful. Down in the basement, myself, Jeff and Eric were already eliminated from the playoffs.
This left four teams battling for the final three playoff spots. There were a pair of 6-6 teams, Molly and Rob Masterson. Between those two, Molly enjoyed a 537-point total points lead. Next up, were two 5-7 teams, Don and Calderon. Heading into week 14, Don held the 8-seed, thanks to leading Calderon in points by 609 points.
Both Molly and Masterson were in good shape. Thy both held solid leads in points over Don and Calderon. How solid? Well, Molly led Rob (like I said earlier, by 537 points), while Rob led Don by 1,172 and Calderon by 1,781. So yeah, the battle for the playoffs was really a two-man race for one spot.
For Don it was simple. He held a solid 609-point lead over Rich in points and he had a much better week fourteen opponent. While he faced 11th place Jeff, Calderon faced Matt, who sat in third place. So, if both he and Rich won, all he had to do was maintain that point lead. If they both lost, then again, maintain that point lead. If either won and the other lost, the winner would be in.

In what proved to be a stunning result, all four teams won. Both Molly and Masterson sealed their playoff spot, finishing their seasons 7-6. In fact, thanks to points, both slipped by Griff in the standings. As he fell to the 7-seed, while Molly jumped to the 5-seed, one spot ahead of Masterson. Meanwhile, Don may have won, but his performance was a disaster, scoring just 985 points, as Calderon crushed Jeff, producing 2,163 points in the process. Don’s 609-point lead was gone and Calderon slipped into the final playoff spot. Don became the first person in league history to have the 8-seed heading into the final week, win, but still miss the playoffs because of points.

Calderon may have made it to the playoffs, but it wasn’t much fun, as the top seed and eventual champ crushed him in historic fashion, 2,333 – 1,171. Also in the quarterfinals, while Masterson couldn’t take down 3-seed Matt, Molly actually advanced, pulling off the upset, defeating Burrier 2,013-1,281. In the semis though, she was no match for the other Matt, losing 1,679-929.

WHERE WE STOOD
Myself and Calderon were the beasts of the league, cruising to 10-win seasons, while Masterson and Colby weren’t far behind. Also already locked into a playoff spot were a pair of 7-5 teams, Griff and Molly. This left just three teams fighting over the last two playoff spots.
Heading into the final week, Matt held the 7-spot, with a 6-6 record. However, he trailed both Bob (-1114) and Jeff (-76) in total points. Those two were both 5-7 on the season, with Bob holding the final playoff spot, thanks to his 1,038-point lead in points.
The scenarios were this. If Matt could win, he would be in. However, he had the toughest draw, facing 9-3 and top seed Robio. Bob had the easiest opponent, taking on last place Burrier. Jeff also had a decent opponent in that final week, facing 10th place Don. Of course, if Matt lost, then all he needed was either Bob or Jeff to lose. If both won, it was unlikely Matt catch Bob in points, so he would then need to outscore him by 76 points. Totally doable.

Matt suffered a brutal 15-point defeat to me. Yep, a simple 15 points ended Matt’s season, as both Bob and Jeff earned victories. Bob took the 7-seed, while Jeff not only maintained his point lead over Matt, he increased it by 405 points. Jeff got the 8-seed, while for the second year in a row, Matt was a playoff team heading into the final week, but not a playoff team after the final week. He’s the only person to suffer this fate in league history.

Jeff stood no shot, falling to top-seed Robio, 1,409-871. Meanwhile, Bob was a popular pick to advance because A) He’s Bob and B) he was the 7-seed and both Bob and the 7-seeds knew how to advance. Well, not this time. This was Calderon’s season and he easily beat Bob, 1,798-1,182, eventually winning it all that year.

Up top, Griff, Calderon and Eric were in a three-way battle for the top spot. A step below, I was 7-5, with a playoff birth locked up. However, we still had a stunning five teams fighting for four playoff spots. We had four 6-6 teams, led by two-time defending champ, Bob Castrone. He was on top, thanks to points. Masterson was 365 points back, Molly was 500 points behind, while Neatock was a distant, 2,211 points back. All four were sitting in a playoff spot heading into week 13.
The odd man out was Burrier. He was just 5-7, but was still in the ballgame thanks to points. He was 439 points behind Bob, but just 74 behind Masterson, up 61 on Molly and held a solid 1,772-pt lead over Matt. For the four 6-6 teams, it was simply…win and they were in. Of course if Burrier lost, the rest remained in. If any of the 6-6 teams lost and Burrier won, it came down to points. Of the five, Bob had the toughest challenge, taking on 1-seed Griff, while Masterson was facing Robio, the fourth place team. Molly had the easiest of opponent, taking on 12th place Jeff, but Matt and Burrier couldn’t complain either; the former was facing 11th place Don, while the latter was up against 10th place Colby.

While Masterson locked up a playoff spot at 7-6, he had to settle for the 6-seed, as Molly not only also sealed a playoff spot at 7-6, but passed Rob in points. She went into the week down just 135 points, but outscored Rob by 167 points. Bob couldn’t take down the top seed, but thanks to his dominance in points, remained in the post-season at 6-7, locking up the 7-seed. Matt also lost, as a non-playoff Don team had his second best game in over three years. Meanwhile, Burrier took care of business against Colby. Thanks to a solid 1,883-point lead over Matt in points, Rich sealed the 8-seed, while Matt missed the playoffs.

The teams battling for the last playoff spots did some damage in the post-season. As the 8-seed, Burrier upset the top-seed, Griff, in a low scoring affair (1,150 – 1,084), while Bob also delivered as the 7-seed, crushing Calderon, 1,894 – 1,249. Masterson failed to get past 3-seed Eric, while Molly lost a tough one to 4-seed Robio, falling 1,625 – 1,528. In the semifinals though, both Burrier and Bob’s magical run came to an end. Bob lost by just 83 points to me (the eventual champ), while Rich was a no-show, losing to Eric, 1,163 – 677.

It was the last year we had divisions and Molly and Masterson were dominating, nearly breaking scoring records along the way. Griff wasn’t far behind and Burrier had already sealed a playoff spot. In the basement, Eric sat alone. With his sole win, he’s the only person who had been eliminated from the playoffs with one week left to play. This left seven teams still vying for four playoff spots (a record for the final week).
Sitting in seeds 5-7, we’re a trio of 6-6 teams. Don was up top, leading Colby by just 160 points and up 285 points on Robio. For the three of us, it was simple…win and we’re in. Don had the toughest challenge though, taking on Masterson, who was battling Molly for the top seed. I was taking on Bob, who was outside the playoff picture, trying desperately to get back into the post-season and defend his title. Colby was also battling a 5-7 team (Calderon) trying to desperately to squeeze into the playoffs.
Speaking of 5-7, there were four of those babies, but only one was in the playoffs. Of all seven teams yet to clinch, Matt led everyone in points by a ton (at least 1,600 total points). Following him was Bob, Jeff and Calderon. Rich actually led Bob in points (by 308 points), while Jeff was so far back of everyone in points, he didn’t really have a chance. Anyhow, Bob had to face me. I was the current 7-seed, but I had lost four in a row and it had been weeks since I put up a fight due to injury issues. Calderon was stuck playing Colby, who sat in fifth, while Jeff got to face last place and one-win Eric. The stage was set.

With his win, Colby locked up the 5-seed with a 7-6 record, while Calderon was eliminated after falling to 5-8. This left five 6-7 teams. Matt led them all in points and was awarded the 6-seed. Bob was second in points and earned the 7-seed. Jeff won, but just didn’t have the points and settled in for the 10-spot. This left Don and me as the final 6-7 teams. Don went into the weekend with a 285 lead in points and just expanded it by another 355 points, thus giving the 8-seed to Don, leaving me outside the playoffs, looking in.

This amazing seven-man battle for four playoff spots seemed sort of pointless because the top appeared too strong, yet that’s why we play the game. 8-seed Don stunned Molly in the quarterfinals, while 7-seed Bob shocked Masterson with a two-point win. As a 5-seed, Colby led all scorers with 2,197 points, defeating Griff. Meanwhile, Matt had the look and feel of a spoiler, but he failed to get by 3-seed Burrier. In the semifinals, Don fell to Burrier, 1,405-1,211, as Bob held on to defeat Colby by just 21 points (1,201-1,180). In the finals, 7-seed Bob took down Burrier, 1,590-1,283, becoming the second person in league history to win a title in back-to-back seasons and the second person to win a title, despite not clinching a playoff spot until the season’s final week.

WHERE WE STOOD
I was on my way to a 12-win season while Calderon, Bob, Matt ,Griff and Colby were already locked into playoff spots. Down at the bottom, Masterson, Eric and Molly had combined for just seven wins and had no shot to enter the post-season. This left three people technically vying for two playoff spots and those three were all in the same division.
Burrier and Don were both 5-7, while Jeff was outside the playoffs looking in, with a 4-8 record. Since the only way Rich was going to miss the playoffs was by him losing and Don losing, yet outscoring Rich by 2,233 points, let’s go ahead and assume that wasn’t going to happen.
So during the final week, it was all down to two teams and one spot and they were facing off against each other in a de facto playoff game. The winner was in, the loser was out.

Based on the final score, it appeared neither Don or Jeff wanted any part to a playoff spot, but in the end, Don pulled out a low scoring, 918-873 victory. Coupled with a Burrier loss to Matt, Don was able to move up and earn the 7-seed, while Rich became the first and only 5-8 team to make the playoffs. Jeff earned the fourth pick in the next season’s draft, as he watched the playoffs from home.

Once the playoffs started, Don continued his low-seed, quarterfinals magic, upsetting (yet again) 2-seed Calderon, 1,114 – 716. Burrier had no such magic, falling to 1-seed Robio, 1,741 – 1,192. In the semifinals, Don got to be my next victim, losing 1,705 – 1,181.

Matt Neatock stood up alone up top, with Bob, Griff and Jeff not too far behind, all with the post-season spots locked up and were guaranteed top four seeds with wins. Directly below them were Masterson and Don, both 7-5, both already receiving their post-season invites. Down in the basement, myself, Molly and Burrier had been eliminated.
This left three teams vying for two playoff spots. Calderon and Colby were both 6-6, both sitting in the final two playoff spots heading into week thirteen. Directly below them was Eric at 5-7. Rich was in a good spot. Not only did he have the easiest foe, 10th place Molly, but he was dominating the other two in points, leading Eric by 1,187 and Colby by 1,824 points.
This meant that the final spot really came down to Colby and Eric. Now all Colby had to do was win and he was in, but he was facing second place Bob. Colby also got in if Eric lost to Jeff, who was in fourth place. However, if Colby lost and Eric won, he would have to outscore Eric by 637 points. Not impossible, but unlikely if he was coming off a loss and Eric was winning.

WHERE WE STOOD
Molly sat on top, while Calderon and Bob were right behind, all three locked into the playoffs. Down at the bottom, Matt, Masterson and Griff were already thinking about next year. This left a stunning six teams still trying to clinch one of the five remaining playoff spots.
David Hightower was on top of that bunch, with a 7-5 record, but he was last in points among them all. This left four 6-6 teams. Colby was in an awkward situation. He could still miss the playoffs, yet he was in first place in his division (he was battling Don for the top spot). Heading into the final week, I was the best of the 6-6 teams, leading them all in scoring by a ton. Eric was 3,072 points back, while Burrier occupied the 8-seed, 408 points behind Eric. The only one sitting out and wanting in was Don. at 5-7, he was a game back of the 6-6 teams, but he wasn’t in a terrible position. He actually led both Eric and Burrier in points, holding a 482-pt lead over his son. He also had an outside shot to win his division (he trailed Colby by a game and 565 points). Lastly, he had the easiest matchup that week, facing last place Matt, while Burrier had the stiffest competition, taking on Calderon, who sat in second place.

Colby took care of business, taking down Masterson and earning the division title (and three seed that came with it). David failed to crack 700 and lost to Bob, while I scored 2,100 in a victory over Eric. This allowed me to leapfrog David for the 6-seed. Meanwhile, Burrier was crushed by Calderon and Don scored over 1,500 in a win over Matt. Thus, the final two playoff spots came down to Eric, Burrier and Don. Because the latter easily bettered the other two in points, he was now a playoff team. Meanwhile, Eric only increased his lead over Burrier in total points. He was in as the 8-seed, while Burrier missed out on the playoffs.

Eric caught a break, as 1-seed Molly only scored 982 points, but he couldn’t take advantage of it, scoring just 850 points. As a 6-seed, David also fell, failing to show up against 3-seed Colby, losing 1,041 – 652. Meanwhile, I took care of 4-seed Bob, 1,641 – 1,136, while Don advanced, taking out 2-seed Calderon, 1,505 – 1,133. For the second time in three seasons, three of the four semifinal teams came from the pool of teams who didn’t clinch a playoff spot until the final week. Anyhow, in the semis, I eliminated Colby easily, 1,760 – 1,064, while Don escaped with a 1,281 – 1,119 victory of 1-seed Molly. For the second time in three years, it was Don vs Robio and just like two years earlier, Don prevailed, beating me 1,216 – 1,041.

Yes, thankfully, head-to-head was no longer the top tiebreaker. Points were what mattered. Anyhow, David was on top by a lot, trying to become the first 11-2 team heading into the season’s final week. Below him were Bob, Don and Eric (he held a one-game lead over his dad for the division lead). Matt was the final team to have already sealed a playoff spot with seven wins. Yet, only Griff, with his three wins, was the only team no longer fighting for a post-season spot. This left six teams fighting for three playoff invites.
In the six, seven spots, Calderon and Burrier were both sitting at 6-6. Both could seal the deal with a win, but if they lost, it could get interesting. Next up were a pair of 5-7 teams (Molly and Robio). Molly had the 8-seed over me because of points. In fact, she led all the teams fighting for a playoff spot in points. However, if either Rich lost, things would get interesting. Not only did both of them trail Molly in points, they both trailed me as well. Calderon was 322 points behind me, while Burrier was down 2,030 points. On top of all that, 4-8 Masterson had yet to be eliminated. He was facing me and he had one way in. He needed to beat me, he needed Molly to lose to Eric and Rob then needed to outscore Molly by 968 points. Colby was also a 4-8 team, but even if he won, he was so far behind in points, he could never win a tiebreaker, even though he officially wasn’t eliminated from the post-season.

As the 6-seed, Molly failed to show, losing to 3-seed Bob, 1,537 – 887. The 8-seed, Burrier, came close, but eventually fell to the top-seed (David), 1,334 – 1,241. Calderon was the only one to survive the quarterfinals, when he knocked out 2-seed Don, 1,604 – 1,436. The following week, Rich kept on rolling, taking down 1-seed David, 1,067 – 965. However, he’s quest the become the first team to be fighting for a playoff spot in the season’s final week to win a championship ended when he lost to #5 Matt, 1,444 – 811.

Fun fact. This was the last season we used head-to-head as a tiebreaker (thank God!!). Anyhow, we had five teams fighting for the final four playoff spots, so someone was about to get left out to dry.
This year also had a lot of weird variables. First you had 7-5 Griff who actually entered the final week as the 3-seed, because he was leading his division and Masterson, who was the other 7-5 team, was only the 6-seed. Obviously if they both won, they were in. However, while Rob was facing a bad Matt’s team, Griff was facing me. I was one of three 6-6 teams fighting for a playoff spot. Yet, I was currently a non-playoff team because I was 0-2 against Rich and Don (the other 6-6 teams) in head-to-head, but what separated me from them was the fact that I would face Griff in the season’s final week. Because of this and the fact I already beat him earlier that year, if I won in week thirteen, I would win the division and in one victory go from out of the playoffs to the 3-seed. Yet, Griff was still pretty safe because once I earned the division, I no longer counted in head-t0-head for the final playoff spots. This mattered because while Griff would be 0-2 against me, he was 3-0 against Masterson, Don and Calderon, so Griff would win head-to-head tiebreakers over all of them. Thus, everyone should have been cheering for me to lose. Why? Because while I beat Griff, I was 0-3 against Masterson, Don and Calderon and would automatically be eliminated from the playoffs. Done. Decided, so let’s go back to if Griff lost again.
If Griff was defeated, then the final two playoff spots would really come down to Masterson, Calderon and Don. Again, if Rob won, he was in. If either Don (vs last place David) or Calderon (vs Eric) lost, he was in. However, if Masterson lost and both Don and Calderon won, then Rob would have been eliminated because he was 0-3 against Griff, Don and Calderon. However, if Rob (and myself won), then the final playoff spot was down to Don and Calderon, so if one of them won and the other lost, the winner was in. However, if they finished tied, Rich would take it because Don would lose head-to-head tiebreaker (he also would lose points tiebreaker if it came to that). Again, this is why I finally had enough of the head-to-head.

I only scored 1,205 points and won by just 90, but in the end, that’s all that I needed. I defeated Griff, tying him in the standings. I beat him twice that year and led him in points and I moved up six spots (a record for the final week) to win the division and take the 3-seed. Yet, Masterson also lost (falling to Matt, 933 – 1,144), as did Calderon (losing to Eric (1,116 – 1,139). This secured a playoff spot for both Griff and Masterson, but Calderon needed Don to lose. He didn’t. Mr. Vozzola defeated David in a low scoring affair, 1,243 – 936. Amazingly, none of the five teams fighting for a playoff managed to break 1,250, but it didn’t matter to Don, as he, Griff and Masterson finished 7-6. Since Griff was undefeated against the other two, he got the 6-seed, Don was the 7-seed and thanks to going 0-2 against Griff and Don, Masterson settled for the 8-spot. Calderon was one game behind all them and missed the playoffs.

Sadly for Griff, he got stuck facing the one team he didn’t want to face, me. For the third time that season and the second time in two weeks, Griff lost to me, 1,848 – 1,364. Don pulled off a nice upset, taking down 2-seed Molly, 1,499 – 1,296, while Masterson delivered an even bigger upset, ending 1-seed Burrier’s season, 1,452 – 917. Just like that, three teams who had not clinched a playoff spot heading into the season’s final week were in the semifinals. Two faced off, 3-seed Robio vs 6-seed Rob, a game in which I pulled out a 1,464 – 1,073 victory. On the undercard, Don shocked 5-seed Bob, 1,211 – 1,007. In the 2007 finals, for the first time ever, the championship would be decided by two teams who didn’t clinch a playoff spot until that final week. It ended up being no contest, as Don crushed me, 1,617 – 844.

Okay, this is the first season when we cut a game from the regular season, so the season now ended in week thirteen. Heading into that week, Don was on top, followed by Burrier, Neatock, Griff and Molly. All were in the playoffs. Pretty simply so far. Next up, we had four 6-6 teams. Myself, Colby, David and Eric. Since none of us held a head-to-head advantage over the others, points decided the seeding and Eric was the odd man out. In points, I was dominating (17,965) and Colby wasn’t too far off (17,620), so if all 6-6 teams won in the final week, the final seed would come down to David and Eric. At that point, Erc trailed David by only 159 points.
Behind the 6-6 teams were a pair of 5-7 teams, although only one had a legit shot. Masterson not only would lose a head-t0-head tiebreaker against all four 6-6 teams, he trailed the next nearest person (Eric) by 2,419 points. He wasn’t going to make that ground up. So this left Calderon. He led Eric in points by 64 points and trailed David by only 95.
Obviously if Rich beat Masterson and both David (vs Matt) and Eric (vs Griff) could lose, then it could come down to points, if he got more help. See, he lost to both David and Eric in the regular season, so if those three were tied at 6-7 to end the season, points wouldn’t matter, because he was 0-2 against those teams. In that scenario, Eric would also be out (and David would get the 8-seed). For Rich to get in, he needed Colby to lose. This would eliminate the head-to-head (he beat Colby, David lost to him) and it would come down to total points. As for Eric, it was about the same thing. He needed Calderon to actually win and also needed David and Colby to lose to force a points tiebreaker.

Just like the previous season, all three teams currently sitting in the playoffs, lost their final game. I fell to Bob, Colby couldn’t beat Burrier and David was downed by Neatock. Yet, only Calderon managed to earn a victory, while Eric lost to Griff. Because Calderon had beaten Colby, split with Masterson and lost to me in the regular season, the tiebreaker came down to total points and like Molly the year before, Calderon fell short, missing out on the final seed to David by only 95 points. It’s the tightest total point tiebreaker in league history.

Stunningly, all three teams who backed their way into a playoff spot, managed to pull off upsets in the quarterfinals. 8-seed David pulled off the big upset, taking down 1-seed Don, 1,239 – 1,136. I had the most impressive score, defeated 3-seed Burrier, 1,816 – 1,295, while Colby upended 2-seed Matt, 1,222 – 1,060. In the semis, David’s season came to an end, losing to 4-seed Griff, 1,388 – 1,295, while Colby and I faced off in the semifinals, the latter earning a solid 1,880 – 1,540 victory. In the finals, Griff proved to be too much, as Colby was crushed, 1,882 – 739.

We had six teams separated by just one game, fighting for three playoff spots. The three final seeds heading into the season’s final week were all 6-7. They were Colby, Masterson and David. Between the three, Colby killed them all in points, yet he was at that time the eight seed, because head-to-head was the first tiebreaker and Colby was 0-2 against David and Masterson. Anyhow, despite trailing both Colby and Masterson in points, David was the 6-seed, because he defeated them both throughout the season. Masterson was sitting in the 7-spot.
All three were one game up on Molly, Eric and Matt. Now for David, Rob and Colby, it was simple…win and they were in. Yet, of the three teams in the playoffs, it was Colby who was most likely going to make the show and not because he outscored everybody. While he couldn’t beat David or Masterson in head-to-head, he was undefeated against the three 5-8 teams. So if Rob (vs Don) and David (vs Griff) won, it didn’t matter if Colby beat Burrier, he was in. So how could the bottom three teams sneak in?
Molly was in ninth place at that time, having beaten both Matt and Eric. Her only way in was to have both David and Colby win and have Masterson and Matt lose. She would be tied at 6-8 with Masterson and Eric and would get the final playoff spot because of head-to-head. For Eric, he needed either Masterson or David to lose, Colby to win and he needed Molly to go down as well. In that scenario, he stole the 8th seed. Matt was the 11th place team, although he actually outscored both Eric and Molly, but for him to get in, he needed Masterson and Colby to win, then needed David, Molly and Eric to all lose.
Of course, if a variety of the playoff teams lost and a couple of non-playoff teams won, head-to-head wouldn’t matter and it would come to points. In that case, Colby was solid. Of the rest, Masterson was next, Matt was only 71 points behind Rob, while David sat 125 points back. Molly though was over 1,200 points down and Eric was so far back, he didn’t even belong in the conversation.

Oddly, seeds six, seven and eight all went down, jeopardizing their playoff hopes. However, the teams still trying to get in couldn’t capitalize. Eric couldn’t beat his dad and Neatock got crushed, so both actually fell behind me (who was in last) in the final standings (Eric finished 12, Matt 11th). Molly did manage to win, but since all three teams above her lost, the tiebreaker came down to points and Molly couldn’t keep up with the other three and was eliminated from the playoffs. Masterson took the 6-seed, David the 7-seed and Colby the 8-seed, despite leading the league in scoring. This was the first time I started to think that having a head-to-head tiebreaker wasn’t a good thing in fantasy sports.

David was the only one of the three to advance, upsetting #3 Burrier, 1,274 – 1,190. However, his season wrapped up the following week when he lost to Griff in the semifinals.

WHERE WE STOOD
Before there was the 2011 quarterfinals, the final week of the 2003 season was arguably the league’s greatest. Before we get to it though, let’s see where we stood heading into it. What we had was a stunning six teams fighting for just three playoff spots, with only one team officially eliminated from the playoffs (Don Vozzola). We had a pair of 7-6 teams (Matt and Masterson). Neither officially had locked up a playoff spot, but it would be difficult for either to miss the post-season. Let me explain. Because Rob beat both Bob and Jeff in head-t0-head and Matt split with Bob, even if either Rob or Matt lost, the only way Jeff could pass them in the standings was by passing them in points. He trailed Matt by 1,359 points and Rob by 1,238…so yeah, that wasn’t going to happen.
So in reality, the playoff battle was between four teams fighting for only one spot. Of those four, Bob was on top. Both he and Jeff were 6-7, but Bob had defeated Jeff back in week four, so he owned the tiebreaker. For good measure, he also had a 1,500+ lead in points over Jeff. For Bob it was easy…beat me and he was in. The only problem was, I was the best team in the league, having won nine of ten, leading the league in points by a lot. Of course Jeff also had a tough task. If Bob lost and he won, he was in, but he was facing the potential 3-seed Burrier in the season’s final week.
Behind these two were a pair of 5-8 teams. In the standings, Eric was one spot ahead of Calderon, even though Rich had outscored Eric by over 5,000 total points, because he beat Rich back in week six and head-t0-head mattered. Yet, Eric had no real shot to get into the playoffs. First, he needed to beat Griff, one of the better teams in the league. Then he needed both Bob and Jeff to lose. Then somehow, he needed to outscore Bob by 2,241 points. Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen.
Next up was 11th place Calderon. He was trying to recover from a 1-5 start to the season. He had scored well, outscoring Bob, Jeff and Eric by a ton, so he just needed a lot to happen to force a total points tiebreaker. First, Calderon needed to beat Masterson, who was a playoff team in waiting. He then needed Jeff and Bob to lose. However, he also needed Eric to win. Why? Because if Bob, Jeff and Calderon ended up in a three-way tie, Bob would get the 8-seed, because he beat both Jeff and Calderon in head-to-head. Because Eric beat Bob during the season, if he won and forced a four-way tie at 6-8, the tiebreaker would be total points, which Calderon would win easily.

Well, talk about everything coming up Calderon. But first, both Matt and Masterson lost, but both remained playoff teams. Bob got crushed by me, Jeff couldn’t handle Burrier, while Calderon took care of business against Masterson. Yet, it all came down to Eric. He failed to show up, but his opponent (Griff) showed up even less and thanks to Eric’s 852-774 victory, Bob was bumped from the playoffs and Calderon moved all the way up and in.

IN THE POST
Well, we all know what happened here. Calderon became the first 8-seed to win a playoff game, stunning top-seed and scoring champ, Robio, 1,953 – 1,535 in the quarterfinals. As the 7-seed, Masterson produced the highest scoring game ever, crushing 2-seed Molly, 2,501 – 1,319. Matt couldn’t keep up though, falling to 3-seed Burrier, 1,592 – 1,128. In the semifinals, neither Calderon or Masterson had much fight left in them though. Rich barely scored 1,000 in a loss to Burrier, while Masterson fell to Griff by over 500 points.

WHERE WE STOOD
We had six teams fighting for four playoff spots, with the top four with 7-6 records, with the two non-playoff teams sitting a game back at 6-7. This should be easy to figure out. If Justin, Masterson, Griff and David all won, they were in. However, if they didn’t win, things suddenly got complicated because of the head-to-head tiebreaker. Let’s use bullet points from here to explain it all.
- If Justin lost, he was fine as long as Eric or Masterson lost. However, he could have been in trouble if Rob, Griff and David all won, while Eric lost. This would put him tied with Burrier at 7-7 and even though he outscored Rich by a ton, he lost in their only meeting on the season, thus Rich would win the head-to-head tiebreaker and one of the best scoring teams in the league would miss the post-season.
- If Masterson lost, he would probably remain in good shape. He would beat everyone but Acerno in points (if it came to that), but he also did well in head-t0-head, having defeated Griff, David and Eric, splitting with Justin, losing to Burrier). The only way Rob would miss the playoffs if he lost, Burrier defeated Justin, while Griff and David won and Eric lost.
- If Griff lost, he would be fine as long as both Eric and Burrier won. The only person he feared was Eric. If Griff lost, while Justin, Masterson and Griff won, it would leave him tied with Eric at 7-7 (if Eric won). In that case, he would miss the playoffs, because he lost to Eric in the regular season.
- If David lost, because he was 4-1 against the other teams fighting for a playoff spot, the only way he could miss the playoffs was if Justin, Rob, Griff and Eric all won. This would leave him in a 7-7 tie with Eric, which would be bad, since Eric defeated David in the regular season.
- If Eric lost, he was out. If he won, he’d need help. He would need both Masterson and Justin to win, then have either Griff or David lose (or both). In that case, he would get into the playoffs via a head-to-head tiebreaker.
- If Burrier lost, he was out. If he won, he would need the opposite of what Eric needed. Burrier had to have both Griff and David win, while having either Acerno or Masterson loss (or both). If that happened, he would get in based on head-to-head tiebreaker.

Justin not only won and earned a spot in the playoffs, he passed me in points with a 1,990-pt effort to end the season. Griff also joined Justin in the post-season, advancing up to the 5-seed. By losing to Justin, Burrier was officially eliminated. This left three teams and just two spots. David lost to Don by just 32 points, while Eric defeated Rick by only 22 points. Yet, Eric couldn’t pass David in the standings, because Masterson lost to me. This forced a three-way tie for the final two spots and eliminated head-t0-head as a tiebreaker. Rob led both David and Eric in points, so he secured the 7-seed, while David topped Eric by just 294 total points, thus earning the 8-seed.

IN THE POST
Two of the teams still fighting for a playoff spot in the season’s final week got to face off in the quarterfinals, when 4-seed Justin taking on 5-seed Griff. Acerno may have won the scoring crown, but Griff won the low scoring game, 1,256 – 1,088. As the 7-seed, Masterson pulled off the upset in his first playoff appearance, defeating 2-seed Don, 1,421 – 1,254. As the 8-seed though, David didn’t put up much of a fight, failing to break 1,000, he lost to 1-seed Molly. A week later, both Griff and Masterson’s magical run came to an end. Rob was crushed by Molly in the semifinals, 1,646-867, while I owned Griff, 1,598-795.

WHERE WE STOOD
In the league’s third season, we only had three teams fighting for two playoff spots. Rookie Eric sat at 5-8, one game back of a pair of 6-7 teams. For veterans Brian and Rick, it was simple, win and in. For Eric, it was obviously more complicated. He needed to beat his dad (4-9) first and foremost. Then if Brian lost and Rick won, Eric would get in because he best Brian in head-to-head. However, if Brian won and Rick lost, Eric would be out, because he fell to Brian in their only matchup of the season.
Now if both Rick and Brian lost, the head-to-head tiebreaker became moot and it would come down to points. Brian blew both Eric and Rick away in points and was deemed safe. However, Rick only had a 289-point lead over Eric. The stage was set.

The results proved to be quite simple. Brian defeated Justin and was in. Rick fell to the original Matt and was outscored by Eric by 385 points that week, but it didn’t matter, as the younger Vozzola couldn’t escape the older Vozzola, losing 1,778-1,418. No tiebreakers would be needed.
