Ever wonder if we are scoring more now than we use to? No? Never crossed your mind? Luckily for you, that’s how my mind works. Thus, I’ve updated total points per season.
First, a little reminder. Season one only featured eight teams run by eight guys trying to figure out this whole fantasy football thing. Also, between 1999-2004, we played a 14-game regular season. To keep things even, I’ve averaged everything out and the total points below for those early seasons are based on a 13-game regular season. Anyhow…
FUN FACTS
- The average score in this league is 1,275 points per game
- We average 1,500-point games 39 times per year.
- We average 34 games below 1,000 per year.
- We average three 2,000-point games per year.
- A Vozzola is responsible for 16% of all games below 1,000.
RECORD SETTERS
- 2011 was the year of the score. That season, we scored over 209,000 total points in the regular season and 20,662 points in the playoffs…both league highs. Total, we averaged 1,352 points per game. That’s also the year we produced the most 1,500-point games (54). That season featured two teams that averaged over 1,500 (Molly, Masterson), while Bob won his second straight title.
- The record for most 2,000-point games in a season was 2014. We had 10, including three by Bob, who had them back-to-back in week 13 and the quarterfinals
- The lowest scoring season (not counting the first year when we had just eight, was back when Bob, Matt, Jeff and Calderon were rookies. In 2003, we scored just 188,273 points in the regular season.
- However, the lowest scoring season when you include postseason was 2008, when the league averaged just 1,206 points per contest.
- Fun fact: The seasons when Don won the championship (2006, 2008) are two of the bottom four lowest scoring seasons. Not sure what that says, but just saying it.
- Speaking 2008, that year was the year where we produced the lowest amount of 1,500-point games. On the season (both regular and post), we scored over 1,500 just 28 times (less than two per week).
- In 2005, no one in the league broke 2,000 in a game. It’s the only season that has happened.
- Back in 2000, the two teams in the league failed to score 1,000 a combined 56 times. That’s a record. However, if we only care about when most of the league was in the league, then that would be 2003 when we hit 48.
A CHANGING LEAGUE
- The big thing you’ll notice is the point jump that began in 2011. Between 1999-2010, the average team scored 1,246 points per game. However, since 2011, that has jumped up a stunning 86 points to 1,332 points per contest. One might want to argue that the scoring change I made played a big part in that, but that’s not completely true, as the scoring jump began in 2011. I didn’t change scoring until 2014.
- The biggest difference is the amount of 1,500-point games compared to sub-1,000 games. Between 1999-2010, the league produced 36 games per season over 1,500 (two of which were +2,000) , while failing to hit 1,000 42 times per season. However, since 2011, that has flipped. We now produce 47 games over 1,500 per season, while failing to hit 1,000 just 20 times per year.
