Quarter Century | Rob Masterson’s Foes

Below are the teams that you have had the most success beating again and again and again, plus your least favorite foe and everything else you need to know.

MOST COMMON OPPONENT

Robio Murray: Rob and Rob have faved off 33 times, which is the second most by two opponents in league history.

TOP THREE FAVORITE FOES

#3 Jeff Greenblatt – Masterson is 12-9 against his former roommate. He won their first three meetings and eight of the first 10. However, in 2017, Greenblatt swept Rob in a pair of games and did it again in 2018. He would go on to win six of seven between 2017-2020. However, Rob would win the next three (2020-2022), before falling to Jeff last year.

#2 Griff Coomer – Masterson is 15-11 against Coomer, with most of that damage being over the last decade or so. Now Rob did manage to win their first meeting back in 2002, but it was Griff who took care of business back then. He would win the next three and between 2002-2013, Griff would lead the series 9-5. During that stretch, Masterson never beat Griff in back-to-back games. However, that issue went away in 2014 and beyond. Rob would win the next five games and since 2014, he’s 10-2 against Griff. In the only two defeats, Rob delivered a weekly low score.

#1 Don Vozzola – Just like with Griff, Rob is 15-11 against Don. I’m putting him in the top spot because, while Masterson has not beaten Griff in the postseason, he has beaten Don. In fact, that victory came in Rob’s first season in the league, when he beat Don in the regular season and the quarterfinals. Yet, it was Vozzola who dominated those early years, winning five straight between 2003-2008. Yet, since their second meeting in 2008, Don has done very little against Rob. In fact, from 2008-2023, Masterson has never lost back-to-back games to Don, while doing that himself four times. Since that second game in 2008, Rob is 13-6 against Don.

LEAST FAVORITE FOE

Masterson has had his issues with folks like Colby (12-16), who he once dropped seven straight games to (2007-2010). The newest member, Michael, has not been a joy to face, as Masterson has dropped five of seven games. Rob once beat me in six of seven games between 2012-2017, but overall, he’s 14-19 against me. His 19 defeats to me is tied for the most with the man Masterson has the most trouble with, Rich Calderon.

Overall, Rob is 10-19 against Calderon and that’s only because he’s actually won three of the last four. Now, back in 2003, Rob beat Rich in their first ever meeting, but then Rich would win the next three and eight of the next nine. By the time 2014 rolled around, Rob was just 4-14 against Calderon. Since 2015 though, Masterson has been more competitive, going 6-5, but within that stretch Rich had another three-game winning streak over Rob, who has never beaten Rich three straight times.

FAVORITE POSTSEASON OPPONENT

When you only have three career wins in the postseason against current members in the league, it’s not easy to pick a favorite, so let’s split it between Don and Burrier. Rob is 1-0 against both. In 2002, Rob beat Don in the quarterfinals and in 2006, Rob beat Burrier also in the quarterfinals. His favorite playoff opponent is Molly. He not only went 2-1 against her, but in his two wins, he scored over 2,000, including 2,501 points in the 2003 quarterfinals.

LEAST FAVORITE POSTSEASON OPPONENT

Bob Castrone deserves a nod, defeating Masterson three times in our postseason; all in the quarterfinals (2004, 2011, 2016), but Rob did finally lock in one win against Bob in the 2019 quarterfinals. Thus, let’s go with Eric Vozzola, who has also beaten Rob three times in the playoffs, but has never lost to him. Eric defeated Rob in the quarterfinals in 2012, 2021 and 2022. The 2021 defeat was arguable Rob’s most brutal (other than his two-point defeat to Bob in 2011). In 2021, Rob was the 1-seed who fell to 8-seed Eric. Worse yet, Vozzola went on to win the championship that season.

LONGEST WINNING STREAKS

Rob has a pair of 5-game winning streaks. He did it against Griff between 2014-2017 and Eric back in 2008-2012.

LONGEST LOSING STREAKS

Rob has dropped five straight to both Don (2003-2008) and Calderon (2005-2009), six straight to Bob (2007-2009), but his worst losing streak to one opponent is to Colby, when he dropped seven straight between 2007-2010.
