ROB MASTERSON
Est. 2002
LAST SEASON
2023 proved to not be Rob’s season. His team struggled out of the gate, going 2-3, averaging only 1,116 per contest. A pair of wins over Bob and Griff in week six and seven, which included a 1,866-point effort, put him at 4-3 and kept his playoff hopes alive. Yet, Rob would only win one of his final seven games, dropping his final four, including games where he twice scored over 1,600. He finished with a 5-9 record; good enough for 10th place.
CAREER
With Colby finally bringing up not one, but two titles, Masterson is now the only veteran team without a mug. When he first joined back in 2002, he looked like a potential stud, making it to the playoffs his first three years, twice reaching the semifinals. Yet, over the next six seasons, he produced just two winning seasons (both 7-6), making it to the playoffs twice, reaching the semifinals again in 2006.
Yet, from 2011 through 2019, there arguable was no better team in the regular season. Sure, he lacked true greatness, but during that time, not only did he go to the postseason nine straight seasons (tied for second longest streak), but he produced a winning season in each of those years, earning a six seed or better every time, including five straight four seeds between 2015-2019. After missing the playoffs finally in 2020, he actually produced his first ever top seed in 2021, but fell to the 8-seed in the quarterfinals. And that there is the problem. Rob can’t win in the postseason.
He’s made 16 trips to the playoffs and has won just five games (and just two since 2007). He’s winless in the semifinals, going 0-5. He is the only person to never have played in the title game.
Overall, Rob is 147-166. His .470 winning percentage is 8th best. He has averaged 1,318 per contest, which is 7th best among active teams. His average finish in the standings is 6.55, which is tied for sixth best, while his average finish in points scored is 5.86, which is 4th best. He’s reached the playoffs in 72.7% of his seasons (16 of 22), which is also fourth best in the league. While he does have that one top seed, he is one of four people to never earn a scoring crown. Having said that, he has finished second in points three times and third in points five total times. To put that in perspective, that’s tied for second most top-three finishes (tied with Calderon and ahead of Bob).
In the playoffs, Rob is an awful 5-16. His .238 winning percentage is dead last. He averages 1,324 per game in the postseason, which is 10th best. His foes average 1,478 per contest, which is the third most in the league. In the quarterfinals he’s 5-11, while going 0-5 in the semifinals. In the 2003 quarterfinals, he did score 2,501 points, which remains the most points ever scored in a playoff game. In that same contest against Molly, he outscored her by 1,182 points, which is the largest postseason ass-kicking in league history.
OTHER STATS
In his 313 career games, he has failed to hit a grand in 14.38% of his games, which is 7th best. He has topped 1,500 in 28.43% of his games, which is 7th best. Meanwhile, his foes have failed to hit 1,000 in 12.78% of his games (5th least) and they’ve topped 1,500 in 26.20% of his games, which is 8th most.
Rob has earned the weekly high score in 9.25% of his contests (fourth best), while producing the weekly low score in 7.53% of his games (8th most). His opponents have scored the weekly high in 7.53% of his games (8th most), while they’ve produced the low score only 5.48% of the time, which is tied for second least.
In regard to streaks, Masterson’s longest winning streak sits at nine games (2021), which is tied for the 8th longest in league history. However, between 2019-2020, Rob dropped 10 straight, which is tied for the longest losing streak in league history. His best 1,000-pt game streak is 29 straight in 2014-2016 (tied for 9th longest), while he once scored over 1,250 in 11 straight, which is tied for the 7th longest streak. He once went 55 weeks without a weekly low score (5th longest) back in 2003-2005, then later went 25 weeks (2021-2023) without a weekly high score (tied for 34th longest).
In single game action, Rob’s 2,501 in the 2003 playoffs was the all-time record for 16 years, before falling to Bob in 2019. Oddly enough, when Castrone broke Rob’s record by scoring 2,507 points, it was against Masterson, who scored 2,105 points. The combined 4,612 points score is the most points two teams have ever scored in a single game. Overall, Rob has six games that are in the top-25 for most combined scores.
When it comes to scoring a ton and not winning, Masterson has ten games among the top-50 scores that failed to produce a win, including the most when he hit 2,105 in that defeat to Bob and the third most, when he scored 1,770 points in 2021, but lost to Burrier.
On the flip side, Rob’s worst outing was a 435-point effort in 2005 loss to Burrier. That remains the fourth lowest single game point total by a team. On top of that, Rob is the record holder for being on the wrong side of the largest ass-kicking in league history. In 2019, he lost to me, 2,099 – 475. The 1,624 point difference is the largest in league history.
