Quarter Century | Bob Castrone’s Foes

Below are the teams that you have had the most success beating again and again and again, plus your least favorite foe and everything else you need to know.

MOST COMMON OPPONENT

There are three names on this list. Bob has faced Robio Murray, Rob Masterson and Matt Neatock 31 times each.

TOP THREE FAVORITE FOES

#3 Richard Burrier – Mr. Castrone has taken 19 of 28 meetings against Burrier since Bob joined the league in 2003. Of course, the early days did not look like Bob would dominate Rich. In their first ever meeting, Bob failed to sniff 1,000 and lost. He would lose four of his first five games against Rich. Then he would begin to dominate. Bob would win the next four until 2011, when Rich won again. However, Bob got his revenge in the 2011 title game with a 1,590 – 1,283 victory. That would launch a 5-game winning streak over Burrier. After splitting the next four between 2014-2016, Bob would produce seven straight wins over Rich, before dropping two straight to him in 2022-2023. His first back-to-back defeats to Burrier since he dropped three straight in 2005-2006.

#2 Robio Murray – Bob owns 21 wins (to only 10 defeats) against me. Those 21 victories are both the most Bob has over one team and the most I’ve suffered by a single team. In the early days, there wasn’t domination. Bob won his first meeting against me, but I won the second game later in 2003. Through 2006, Bob held a slim 4-3 lead over me in the series. Then a two-game sweep in 2007 would launch a four-year run where we would face off twice per year (two of those times in the playoffs). Bob would win eight of ten games, including the 2010 title game. In 2012-2013, Castrone would have his only three-game slide against me (including the 2012 semifinals). However, since 2014, Castrone has continued to be a major thorn in my side, having taken nine of the last 11 games.

#1 Don Vozzola – These two first met in 2003 and Bob won with a weekly high score. He would win again in 2004, despite only score 781 points (781-751). And that’s how life was between 2003-2007. In those years, Bob beat Don in four of seven games, but he only cracked 1,400 once, while Don failed to hit a grand in their first five games. However, starting in 2009, all the way through 2018, Castrone would dominate Don, winning 13 of 14 games, which included a then-record eight game winning streak (which included three weekly high scores). However, Don was able to wrestle some control away from Bob, as Castrone has dropped four of the last seven meetings, including the last two.

LEAST FAVORITE FOE

While Bob is barely holding off teams liked Eric (13-12), Masterson (16-15) and Michael (3-2), the only team to hand Bob more defeats than wins is Rich Calderon. Yep, Castrone is just 13-15 against Rich. In their first five meetings, Calderon took four of the first five, including a 2004 semifinals game. Yet, Rich would take three straight starting in 2008 and from 2008 through 2013, Bob would only go 2-7 against Rich, losing two more times in the postseason. In 2014 and 2015, Bob would take three straight, including a victory in the 2014 quarterfinals, but since 2016, Bob can’t seem to get anything going. Yes, he has a pair of two-game winning streaks in that time, but he’s just 4-7 since 2016, currently riding a three-game losing streak to Rich.

FAVORITE POSTSEASON OPPONENT

Bob owns a .750 winning percentage (3-1) against three teams; Griff, Masterson and Colby. Five of those wins came in the quarterfinals, three in the semifinals and only one (Griff in 2004) were in the finals. However, Bob’s favorite postseason foe has to be Burrier, who he has beaten four times and never lost. Bob first beat him in the 2011 title game, helping him lock up back-to-back championships. Since then, Castrone has eliminated Rich in the quarterfinals in 2015, 2017 and 2021.

LEAST FAVORITE POSTSEASON OPPONENT

Officially Bob has never beaten Jeff or Michael in the playoffs, but he’s never play Evangelist in the postseason and he’s only faced Jeff once. Thus, his least favorite foe has to be Matt Neatock. Bob is just 1-3 against Matt in the playoffs. His only win came in the 2014 title game, where he held on to a 1-point lead the entire fourth quarter of a game, while Matt had two players playing. Besides that though, Matt has always prevailed. He beat Bob in the 2007 semifinals. In 2017, the two met again in the finals, but this time Matt was the better of the two and in the 2018 quarterfinals, with Matt chasing a repeat, Castrone lost by just 21 points (1,492 – 1,471).

LONGEST WINNING STREAKS

Bob is the king of long winning streak against one team. He has three 7-game winning streaks (all since 2014) over Griff (2018-2023), Masterson (2014-2019) and Burrier (2017-2021). However, his longest winning streak is against Don, who he beat eight straight times between 2012-2018.

LONGEST LOSING STREAKS

Bob’s longest losing streak to one opponent came via Griff Coomer, who defeated Castrone five straight games starting in 2012 and ending in 2014.
